'Angler' Schaeffler dominates...RBC Heritage leads again

At this rate, it looks like "America's Angler" is going to do it all by himself. World No. 1 Scotty Schauffler (28-USA), who has three wins this year, including last week's "dream stage" Masters, carded eight birdies in the third round of the RBC Heritage ($20 million purse), a PGA Tour event, to shoot an 8-under 63 and take sole possession of the lead with a 16-under 297 total. Schauffler was tied for 10th after the second round the day before. Jeff Straka (AUT) is one stroke back in second (15-under par) and Colin Morikawa is third (14-under par). Ludvig "Woods of Sweden" Oberg, who finished second at the Masters, is tied for fourth (13 under par). The Masters-like battle for the title between Schauffler, Morica, Oberg and three other 20-somethings was set to unfold on the final day. Day 3 of the tournament at the par-71 Harbortown Golf Links on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, USA. Schaeffler started off with a birdie on the first hole, using his signature "fisherman swing," in which his feet slide and his arms lift the club as if he's reeling it in. He made his first birdie on No. 2 (par-5) and followed it up with five birdies in the first half, including holes 4-5-7-9. He added birdies on No. 11 (par-4) and No. 15 (par-5) in the second round. Schaeffler's golf looks so easy. He hits it straight and far off the tee and gets the ball on the green with his second shot, which is either a birdie opportunity or an easy par. Schaeffler has a fairway percentage of 78.57% (tied for fifth) despite hitting cannons up to 332 yards in this tournament. He's second in greens in regulation at 77.78%. Schauffler's worst offense is putting, ranking 27th with 1.67 putts per on-green. After struggling with short putts last year, Schauffler has made a huge turnaround thanks to Rory McIlroy (NI), who advised him to "try a mallet putter with a blunt back of the putter head". "I'll never advise Schauffler again," said McIlroy, who went on to help make Schauffler a household name. In his last four starts, Schauffler has won (Arnold Palmer Invitational), tied for second (Players Championship), tied for third (Houston Open at Texas Children's), and won (Masters). The key to his high level of focus is his religious dedication to the game of golf. He always says, "It doesn't matter if I win or lose. My identity is forever secure in God," he says. Wearing his Masters green jacket, he says, "I feel like professional golf is a job where you're never satisfied. Even if I win today, I have to tee off again on Thursday in another tournament." "The joy of winning is only until today, and I have to practice what I lack again," he said. Kim Si Woo and Kim Joo Hyung tied for 17th (9-under par) and Lim Sung Jae and Ahn Byung Hoon tied for 25th (7-under par). [](
